The use of the term “clan” in the German media tends to be associated with large Arab families, illegal dealings and young men with impressive beards and even more impressive muscles. Men like Agit, Ahmad, Parham, Kianush and Sinan, who, in Another Reality, give us insight into their (men’s) world that is as irritating as it is surprising, even amusing.

They visibly devoted a lot of time and trust to the filmmakers Noël Dernesch and Oliver Wildhauer. In return, the directors give their protagonists plenty of room for their self-portrayal rendered in cool and temperate images. The overall impression is that of a stereotype machismo that fetishizes big cars and conjures up “the laws of the jungle” as legitimate violence. But there is also a feeling of shame, which is why one of them does not want to tell his former teacher that he was in prison. And even though they keep expressing their disrespect of the state and law, it becomes increasingly obvious that these are people who struggle for their identity, people who want to feel part of the country they grew up in.

Neither preachy nor naively admiring, the Swiss and German filmmakers Demesch and Wildhauer leave it up to the audience to decide whether it wants to react to the confessions of the protagonists with concern or sympathy. Either way: Agit and the others are characters that you won't forget in a hurry.

Quando nei media tedeschi si sente il termine «Clan», vengono subito in mente diverse associazioni: famiglie arabe molto numerose, associazioni illegali e giovani con muscoli ancora più imponenti delle loro barbe. Giovani uomini come Agit, Ahmad, Parham Kianusch e Sinan, che in Another reality forniscono una visione interna del loro mondo (maschile) che irrita, stupisce e qualche volta diverte.

Tutti i protagonisti hanno dato molto tempo e fiducia ai registi Noël Dernesch e Olli Waldhauer. In compenso, questi ultimi hanno lasciato loro lo spazio adeguato per raccontarsi in prima persona. L’impressione generale è quella di un machismo stereotipato, che legittima la violenza secondo “la legge della giungla” e che feticizza le auto più grosse. Ma c’è anche una sensazione di vergogna, ed è per questo che uno dei protagonisti non vuole dire al suo ex professore di essere finito in prigione. Nonostante una continua manifestazione di disprezzo per Stato e leggi, diventa sempre più ovvio che queste sono persone che lottano per la loro identità, persone che vogliono fare parte del paese nel quale sono cresciute.

In modo né moralista né ingenuo, il duo di registi svizzero/tedesco Dernsch e Waldhauer lascia allo spettatore la possibilità di decidere se reagire in modo preoccupato o con simpatia alle confessioni dei protagonisti. In ogni caso: Agit e gli altri non sono personaggi che si dimenticheranno facilmente.

Wenn der Begriff «Clan» durch die deutschen Nachrichtenmedien schwirrt, weckt er sofort bestimmte Assoziationen: Von arabischen Grossfamilien, illegalen Machenschaften und jungen Männern mit imposanten Bärten und noch imposanteren Muskeln. Solche wie Agit, Ahmad, Parham, Kianush und Sinan, welche uns in Another Reality eine Innensicht ihrer (Männer-)Welt liefern, die einen ebenso irritiert wie überrascht – und manchmal auch amüsiert.

Sie alle haben den Filmemachern Noël Dernesch und Oliver Wildhauer offensichtlich viel Zeit und Vertrauen geschenkt. Dafür lassen diese ihren Protagonisten in kühl temperierten Bildern reichlich Raum zur Selbstinszenierung. Es zeigt sich, durchaus klischeegemäss, ein Machismo, der die «Gesetze des Dschungels» als Gewaltlegitimation beschwört und dicke Autos fetischisiert. Aber da ist auch die Scham, derentwegen einer seiner ehemaligen Lehrerin nicht eingestehen will, dass er im Gefängnis war. Und obwohl sie immer wieder Missachtung von Staat und Gesetz ausdrücken, wird zunehmend spürbar, dass wir es hier mit Menschen zu tun haben, die mit ihrer Identität ringen. Die sich eigentlich dem Land zugehörig fühlen wollen, in dem sie aufgewachsen sind.

Weder moralisierend noch naiv bewundernd, überlässt es das schweizerisch-deutsche Regie-Duo Dernesch und Wildhauer seinem Publikum, ob es auf die Bekenntnisse ihrer Protagonisten mit Befremden oder Sympathie reagieren will. So oder so: Agit und die anderen sind Figuren, die einem nicht so schnell aus dem Kopf gehen.

Lorsque le mot «clan» est évoqué dans les médias allemands, il génère aussitôt certaines associations: on imagine de grandes familles arabes, des actes illégaux et des jeunes hommes à la barbe imposante et aux muscles qui le sont encore plus. Des jeunes gens comme Agit, Ahmad, Parham, Kianush et Sinan, qui nous offrent dans Another Reality un aperçu de leur monde (d’hommes), lequel peut tour à tour irriter, surprendre ou amuser.

Tous ont manifestement donné beaucoup de leur temps et de leur confiance aux réalisateurs Noël Dernesch et Oliver Wildhauer. En échange, ces derniers offrent à leurs protagonistes, dans des images sans jugement, la liberté de se mettre en scène. Se donne alors à voir un machisme qui, dans le plus pur cliché, invoque la «loi de la jungle» pour légitimer la violence et qui fétichise les grosses voitures. Mais il y a aussi la honte, qui empêche l’un d’entre eux d’avouer à son ancienne professeure qu’il a fait de la prison. Et même si ces jeunes hommes ne cessent d’exprimer leur mépris pour l’Etat et la loi, il devient de plus en plus palpable que nous avons ici affaire à des êtres humains pris dans une lutte identitaire, désirant en réalité se sentir appartenir au pays où ils ont grandi.

Ne tombant ni dans la moralisation ni dans l’admiration naïve, le duo de réalisateurs germano-suisse Dernesch et Wildhauer laisse au public la liberté de réagir avec perplexité ou sympathie aux confessions des protagonistes. Quoi qu’il en soit, Agit et les autres sont des personnages qu’on n’oubliera pas de si tôt.
