Claudia Marschal’s La Déposition explores the recovery process of a man who seeks to regain control of his life by delving into his past. In 1993, Emmanuel, a child from a small French village, hopes to find comfort by confiding in his priest, Hubert. He suffers deep trauma instead. Thirty years later, he decides to break the silence and tell his story. Claudia Marschal’s film reveals the multiple layers of his deliverance. With poignant rigour, the filmmaker highlights the moment when Emmanuel makes a statement at the police station – the man discreetly records his testimony to keep track of it. The director also explores the complex relationship between Emmanuel and his father, who, according to the former, did not sufficiently support him at the time.

The quest for reconciliation is seen as an essential key to moving forward and healing his wounds. The film evokes a quest for truth and deliverance. It is not revenge that motivates Emmanuel, but rather self-understanding, beyond the silence imposed for so many years. His struggle takes on a collective dimension, underlining the crucial importance of expressing oneself and making one’s voice heard. Claudia Marschal’s film is a sensitive portrayal of the fact that testifying is not only an act of courage, but also a step towards healing.
