Nasreen has a wonderful voice and writes touching lyrics. But she is only allowed to sing behind closed doors. Nasreen lives in Tehran, and in Iran women must not sing in public. Her husband does not want his wife to sing either, even at home. This is why Nasreen’s voice can only be heard behind the locked bedroom door when her husband is away.

When Leila Amini begins filming her sister Nasreen, the latter is a deeply unhappy woman. She suffers from depression and is stuck in an arranged, unhappy marriage with two children. Layla follows Nasreen for seven years on a courageous journey out of the unwanted marriage, towards a self-determined life as a musician. Leila plays a double role behind her camera: She is not only an observant filmmaker, but also a sister who plays a supportive and motivating role. This creates a tangible closeness that an outside director would not have achieved.

A Sisters' Tale is more than a private family portrait. It is a strong film about the situation in Iran, where the regime’s restrictions permeate private spaces, where women and cultural professionals find it generally impossible to lead a self-determined life and take their art to the outside world, and where people are forced to fight hard for small breathing spaces and for better times. A film that also offers bright spots and hope.
