20 years ago, Simon Baumann’s parents acquired a large farm in the south-western part of France, where they emigrated to. As they are getting older, they are wondering what to do with the farm. None of their sons really want to emigrate to France. Simon Baumann grabs his camera and travels to France – because there is a need to talk. What should happen to the heritage? Who wants what? Do our parents’ dreams have to be ours too? Do we want to inherit anything from parents at all? Where does our life, which is predetermined by the family, end and where does our own begin?

Simon Baumann, who never shows from behind the camera, tells a very intimate family story, in a sensitive, warm, and sympathetic way. The beautiful scenery provides the atmospheric backdrop for the portrait of his parents who were once politically active as a left-wing green power couple in Switzerland and who have meanwhile created their paradise in France. But is it also a paradise for their offspring? As in his previous film Zum Beispiel Suberg, Baumann uses the camera to explore his origins, family, and roots, asking questions and doing research. Wir Erben is an intimate family portrait as well as a political story. A story about privileges that perhaps only these two generations are familiar with – the older generation, who had a lot of success in the 60s and 70s, and who now has much to bequeath to their descendants. Far more than just possessions.

Come nel suo ultimo film, Zum Beispiel Suberg, Baumann esplora le sue radici, la sua famiglia e le sue origini, ponendo domande e conducendo ricerche. Wir Erben è sia un ritratto familiare intimo che una storia politica, che tratta di privilegi forse conosciuti solo da queste due generazioni: quella anziana, che ha ottenuto molto negli anni '60 e '70 e che ora ha molto da trasmettere ai suoi discendenti. E non si tratta solo di beni materiali.

Müssen die Träume unserer Eltern auch die unseren sein? Was wollen wir überhaupt von den Eltern übernehmen? Wo endet das familiär vorbestimmte Leben, wo beginnt das eigene?

Simon Baumann, der nie hinter der Kamera hervortritt, erzählt eine sehr intime Familiengeschichte, feinfühlig, warm, sympathisch – die wunderschöne Landschaft liefert die stimmungsvolle Kulisse für das Porträt der Eltern, die einst als links-grünes Powerpaar in der Schweiz politisiert und sich inzwischen in Frankreich ihr Paradies geschaffen haben. Aber ist es auch für die Nachkommen eines? Wie schon im letzten Film Zum Beispiel Suberg erkundet Baumann seine Herkunft, seine Familie und seine Wurzeln mit der Kamera, fragt und forscht. WWir Erben ist ein intimes Familienporträt und zugleich eine politische Geschichte, eine über Privilegien, wie sie vielleicht nur diese zwei Generationen kennen – die ältere Generation, der in den 1960ern und 70ern viel gelungen ist und die nun an ihre Nachkommen einiges zu vererben hat. Und das ist noch sehr viel anderes als nur Besitz.

Un magnifique paysage offre un décor propice au portrait des parents, qui formaient autrefois un couple de pouvoir, politiquement actif en Suisse au sein de la gauche et des verts et qui se sont depuis créé leur paradis en France. Mais leurs descendants ont-ils les mêmes aspirations ? Comme dans son dernier film, Zum Beispiel Suberg, Baumann explore ses origines, sa famille et ses racines de sa caméra, interroge, enquête. Wir Erben est un portrait de famille intime en même temps qu’une histoire politique, celle des privilèges dont peut-être seules ces deux générations ont pu bénéficier : l’ancienne, qui a connu de nombreux accomplissements dans les années 1960-70, a beaucoup à léguer à ses descendants. Et cela va bien au-delà des possessions.
