Director Kamila Serwicka returns from Łódź to her village and her family, who live in their grandmother’s house. It is 2020, Covid winter. The house is cramped, and there is much to do: the drain is leaking and wood needs chopping to light the stove. Serwicka films her family’s daily routine: her two younger sisters, who share a bed they also use as a workplace; her religious grandmother watching TV with a cup of tea or poring over a crossword puzzle; her mother working around the clock. The camera discreetly captures every stir of emotion: tense faces, exhausted looks, a comforting hug, shielded by steaming tea water. It soon becomes clear: what weighs on the family is not so much the pandemic but the permanently drunk, nagging father.

The director filmed her family over a period of five years. Since the mother succeeded in separating during that time, the film turned into a story of liberation. As soon as the father is gone, the faces relax. There is laughter, the constraint gives way to restfulness, and reappraisal begins: the daughter wants to know why her mother did not separate from her father much sooner.

A teraz wiosna (Blossoming) is an autobiographical family portrait of impressive intimacy. Consistently told from a female perspective, it becomes a convincing statement against patriarchal role models and the still widespread misconception that a present father is always better than an absent father.
