What does it mean to be normal? Petrolheads asks this question by means of a wild and dizzying ride through more than ten years of Martin’s life. Martin is looking for a normality that promises him support. Yet the film shows that normality is only a possibility of existence, not its scale. Together with his best friend, Casper, Martin is obsessed with finding the perfect 1994 Honda Civic. Petrolheads is far more than the story of two car freaks. In a restless montage, director Emil Langballe reveals Martin’s possible inner world and the two friends’ cosmos: full of speed, wit, pain, addiction, longing, and the will to survive.

Martin came into the care of a foster family when he was five months old and was later adopted. Mild impairment was diagnosed early on. Casper is Martin’s most loyal anchor, someone who stays when everything else starts crumbling. There is no straightforward answer to whether perseverance is an option that will lead to success. From time to time, filming becomes a shelter for Martin and Casper: a place where their friendship, humour and their own language become visible. Instead of creating an explanatory portrait of otherness, the film depicts loneliness, trauma, and how diversely someone’s life can succeed, fail, tilt, and go on. “To me, they are heroes,” Langballe says. Petrolheads shows why.
